The Road to Recovery Involves Getting Back on the Horse

Posted in Uncategorized on May 24, 2011 by drycreekherbs

That cryptic title just means that I have just decided to push myself physically…never mentally or emotionally. Pleeeeeeease. If I don’t push myself, I will just end up all flaccid, for heaven’s sake. So I joined the Salado gym for the third time. The first time was right after I retired and I was dedicated and attended and used the equipment regularly for two years. For me that is eternity. Then I joined again and went one time. Let’s see how I do this time. Three is a charm. I am going to try to do a weight class so to firm up my 64 year-old chicken wings. I went today and OMG. I used the toddler weights and after a half an hour my entire muscular system was twitching’. The hiney end must have been a sight. It twitched for an hour.DSC06977.jpg

So for the second big outing of my convalescence I went to Dallas to see Sally and Jay–it was a pretty quick trip. I invited Sally to lunch but it ends up she treated me to the most divine salad at her beautiful house. We didn’t have much time but we did a great job catching up and sharing books, ideas, and laughs. How lucky to just meet someone on a tour and find we are simpatico. Jay and I enjoyed a great visit…decorating, eating, and shopping. It is pretty amazing that Jay really enjoys me after all these years of just tolerating me. I have total compassion for Jay which is also pretty amazing. He is so totally alone and misses Dan every minute of every day. Jay’s new apartment is very nice although he is already talking about next year when he moves…this next time he says he will go to a retirement home. Jay is 82.

When I got back from Dallas I went home, unloaded my suitcase then went straight to happy hour to meet the chums at the Stagecoach Inn. Next day: Foy’s Garden Soiree. Again, the mean age was 80something. There were two other people my age and maybe one in her 40s. Damned outliers. It was a beeeeeeeautiful day and Foy had everything very Traditional Homeish. Little tea cups with sweet flower centerpieces. I wore a shamelessly smutty dress….so short my broken capillaries looked like part of the hemline.

The next couple of days I did Home Ec-ery…I pickled about 22 jars of beets then made a dress, for cryin’ out loud. I loved it. I knew I was on the mend. So for about a month I was sick as I ever want to be again and now bouncing back just in time for Len to be home. He was thrilled to be back and made much ado over me and his common house cats. He will be home for a while before he heads back……he thinks he will also have a contract in the Cape Cod area….lucky. Speaking of travel, I renewed my subscription to Caretaker’s Gazette. I want to house sit in a posh English home.

Today after ‘weights’ Len picked me up and we did errands. After a hearty fat-lade yummy lunch at Cathy’s, a popular local eatery. We went to a dozen places including the PX where I bought another shamelessly slutty cotton frock…in the MATERNITY department. What is the world coming to? I remember when pregnant women didn’t get out of the car, when dresses were like tents, when slacks had holes cut in the front for the stomach to poke through, and when nothing was form fitting. Well, anyway my little cotton frock is as bold as you can get and it came from the maternity department. Oh, I am NOT pregnant-merely large framed.

I’t is good to be well and back on the horse again.

Katie’s Wedding: A Great Celebration and Pam Would Be Proud

Little Katie is married! She is Katie Gregory now. Married on Pam’s birthday.

I was teaching Child Development the year Katie was born….Pam invited me to come in for the labor and I eagerly accepted so to round out my knowledge and because she was my BFF. That was all a good plan until she had her first serious contraction….I started crying….so I spent the rest of the time sitting in the waiting room with Laverne, Mike’s Mom.

Back to the wedding. It was absolutely lovely—in the backyard of their neighbor which is right on a cliff overlooking Lake Belton and right next door to Katie and Mike’s house and same vista. It was nip and tuck for the weather….it never really rained but it did sprinkle and had a heck of a good lightening show….so as the minister directed us to be seated quickly so he could marry them fast! Katie was gorgeous and poised and did all the right things. Mike said when asked who was giving her away, he responded rightfully, “Her family.” I didn’t even get weepy and I was sure I would. I knew Pam would have loved it….and now that I am writing about it, I am getting weepy now. I wore my contacts for the first time in over a year and I suppose I knew I couldn’t cry and still wear them and have make up on. Vanity always rules with me.

I loved the informality of the wedding. Katie had a cool party favor called a flip book. I thought it was like the booth Hope had at her wedding but this was different. You could pick props to wear or hold and they made a 7 second video which they turned into stills and collated into a mini bound book which you flipped with your thumb so it looked like moving pictures. Very cool. Len and I had ours done and I loved it but I think I lost it. I think–because I drank too much last night. Waaaaaaay too much. Last night and today Len said, “I don’t like to see you that way.” Yikes….He assured me though that I was only ‘that way’ when I got home because I had still another styrofoam cup of wine after we left. Ok, more on the wedding. They served pasta salad, fruit, little meat sandwiches and PEANUT BUTTER AND GRAPE JELLY SANDWICHES! I ate three. Oh. The wedding program was printed on the flip side of fans like they used to have in churches. On the front of the fans was printed either ‘Kissy Kissy’, or ‘Yah’, or ‘Congrats’.

Oh, the reception was in Katie and Mike’s yard…tables and chairs and fairy lights over the dance floor with a disc jockey playing polkas, heavy metal, and rock. Pam would really have loved the polkas. Len and I sat with the Harvey women…that is my former cheerleader, Nicola, and her Mom, Freda, and sister, Hope, and Hope’s daughter….Those are the prettiest young women. Nicola and I had fun reminiscing about her wedding…..Pam and I did the reception decorating 15 years ago. It was fun to see all of Katie’s family, also known as Pam’s family and friends from Temple High School. Those were my happiest working years.DSC_1519.jpg

I think I will just stack the photos below instead of trying to get them with the right text since I can’t seem to do that very well.

Convalesence is boring.

Ok, I think it is done. Four miserable weeks of having a mystery disease was the pits. Now, at last the fever is gone, I only hobble a little, my joints aren’t swollen, and the rash is 90% gone. Well, my legs are peeling in sheets for some reason. I see the Rheumatologist and the Infectious Disease specialist in a month for followup. I don’t want this again. So I am ready to rock again….I need to find a new passion….something to get me back on track.

A Beautiful Wedding and Mother’s Day!

My first official outing after the mystery sickness was a trip to Walmart one day and the next to the Post Office. Next to the library. Finally the big day…a real outing to Austin to Hope C.’s wedding. I made reservations at the hotel where the reception was so I wouldn’t over do too much. It was very convenient. The wedding was beautiful as all weddings are. Tom and Bob served as my personal ushers as I was real wobbly —the lads even danced with me. Hope had a super reception including a sit down dinner, photo kiosk, and Amy’s ice cream bar.

I got up and drove to San Antonio to have lunch with Mom and Brother Bill for Mother’s Day. I have missed seeing Mom–I think it was almost 6 weeks since I have been home. She was reassured that I was no longer sick.DSC06937.jpg DSC06938.jpg DSC06939.jpg

Katie’s Shower

Posted in Uncategorized on May 1, 2011 by drycreekherbs

It was a grrrreat shower and it went off without a hitch thanks to girl friends. Belinda and Susan were invaluable. Belinda drove here three separate times to do napkin folding and setting the table and to bring me serving pieces. She brought Susan one time then Susan came a second time today to be the scullery winch. I am so blessed. She is beautiful and brilliant and she served and did dishes so I could sit up at greet guests. I have to say I didn’t know if I could pull it off. It is just so hard to walk and I am so weak. Today I wonder if I have Guillian-Barre Syndrome. Stop it! Gloomy girl. Where is your unmanageable optimism? Get to the good news.DSC06903.jpg

The Shower. Karen, Kim, and Susan got here at 11:00 as I requested…then we all basically stood around and chatted till 2:00. I was so afraid it would unravel. It didn’t at all. Susan brought the beautiful blue hydrangeas and they looked gorgeous on the table. Suddenly everyone was here. Karen had the chicken crepes all hot and ready and Kim did the veggies. I managed to pour up the Fuzzy Navel Punch (peach schnapps, orange juice, and champagne).

Katie received all kinds of treasures and she seemed thrilled. Melissa, Pam’s cousin and Katie’s Godmother, is correctly serving as mother-of-the-bride. She is perfect and does the perfect job. What can I say? It was stupendous and I thank God for my girl friends.DSCF0170.jpg DSCF0171.jpg DSC06915.jpg
