I Started Writing and Lost My Way

Holy Moly, I haven’t written in my journal the entire month of April—I’ve lost what little will power I have. In the past eight or so years I have really enjoyed writing in my journal. I don’t want to lose this. I also reallllly wanted to print the journal into diary-like books but what for? I can read them just fine on the computer. The fact is, I haven’t made any books in a long time. Just recently I had a chance to look at those books from Mexico trips and I liked seeing those happy snaps! As the song Mary Hopkins made popular goes,

“Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And think of all the great things we would DO
Chorus:

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they’d never endimages.jpg We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way
La la la la la la
La la la la la la

Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance I’d see you in the tavern
We’d smile at one another and we’d say

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose
Those were the dayswoman-soldier461x678.gif Oh, yes, those were the days
La la la la la la
La la la la la la

Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely woman really me?

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose
Those were the daysOh, yes, those were the days
La la la la la la
La la la la la la

Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh, my friend, we’re older but no wiser
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same…

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose
Those were the days
Oh, yes, those were the days
La la la la la la
La la la la la la”

Few people know that the song is really a very old Russian folk song, Дорогой длинною,…well I didn’t know it for a long time—anyway, seemingly Paul McCartney had the song distributed in Italy, Spain, Germany, and France as well as for Mary Hopkins’ version. That song is so right. I feel like a civil war (not ours) soldato when I hear it. OK well, I really went on a tangent there and I haven’t even started recapping the last four weeks.

  1. It’s OK to print these – It will ‘stay real’ that way for others to pick up and enjoy. Yes, ‘those were the days my friend’ – and your journal reminds us all that these too are really ‘the days! my friend’. You are so good at sharing that.
